The Boulder Flatirons

The Flatirons rise dramatically above Boulder, their golden sandstone faces marking the start of the Rocky Mountains. Just minutes from downtown, these iconic formations blend wilderness and accessibility, offering hundreds of climbing routes that range from mellow scrambles to long, exposed multi-pitch adventures.

The rock here — solid sandstone with crisp edges, pockets, and slabs — makes for some of the best moderate climbing in Colorado. While grades often feel approachable, many routes demand focus, creative route-finding, and comfort with exposure. Each climb offers sweeping views of Boulder to the east and the Continental Divide stretching across the western horizon.

The First Flatiron’s Direct East Face (5.6) and Third Flatiron’s Standard East Face (5.4) are timeless classics, celebrated for their fun movement and incredible position high above the city. For more challenge, The Maiden’s East Ridge (5.10c) combines varied climbing with one of the most breathtaking rappels anywhere on the Front Range.

Whether you’re chasing your first summit or revisiting an old favorite, the Flatirons deliver a unique adventure, a place where world-class climbing, history, and scenery meet right at the edge of town.

Note: Several formations, including the Third Flatiron, are subject to seasonal wildlife closures (typically February through July).
